RE: 2007 Motorcycle Sales Figures

The Honda CBF range does not appear in the top list of every country, but is an important constant for Honda. It sold about 25,000 units in Europe so far. Therefore it slowly has become one of Honda's success models of all times, without offering anything spectacular except reasonable performance for reasonable price and every day practicality.

Honda celebrates 25,000 sold CBF

Honda sold in the last business year wordwide 10.37 million motorcycles, an increase of 1% to the 2005 business year. That sounds not much of growth. But thinking about it, what this means in terms of sold units? About 2.5 more motorcycles than the total sales of Triumph for example, alone on growth.

Interesting numbers, Peter.

The Motorcycle & Moped Industry Council of Canada releases an annual report on motorcycle sales and trends. Its interesting to note that for the past 3 years or so, the number of motorcycles sold in Canada has stayed within the 80K to 85K area; but the motorcycle categories being sold has shifted considerably. Competition (ex. 2-stroke MX), off-road, mini-bikes and street bikes have all seen their sale numbers decrease, while dual-sport bikes' sales (which includes the GS) have gone up by 22%. Scooter sales have also increased considerably, by 13%.

I wonder how much of an effect TV shows like Long Way Round and Riders may have had on these trends? For a while last year, it seems Ewan and Charlie were on the cover of every motorcycle magazine you could find :D

FWIW, Honda's sales have been stalling in Canada too. They brought-in the CBR-125 last year as a tool to "recruit" new riders and hopefully develop brand loyalty; similar to what Buell tried to do with the Blast. However, I'm afraid Honda has not been listening to their clients. In the dual-sport category (which has had the greatest market increase), they only offer the XR650 and CRF230, which are little more than off-road bikes with a headlight and turn-signals. Maybe if they imported the Varadero or the Transalp they might have more success ?(

Cheers,
Lucky

Here another data. Has nothing directly to do with motorcycle sales figures, but it is an affecting factor.

The interest in riding a motorcycle is declining in Germany. The record year was in 1982, with 403,931 youngsters who passed the test and got a motorcycle license. 20 years later in 2002 there were a mere 192,833 riding licenses issued, and in 2006 the number has shrunk to 159,840.

A record year for BMW

BMW motorcycle achieved 2007 a new height in sales history. After the "100,000 Units" line was crossed for the first time in the year 2006, BMW motorcycle 2007 closed with 102.467 sold units (+2.4% / '06: 100,064 units). This record number represent on of several high points of the BMW 2007 motorcycle year. They performed in particular well in Italy (which has now become their the second biggest market after Germany), and in the EU as a whole. German figures albeit slightly down are not bad considering the market leadership position.

Most successful model was again the adventure tourer (in German: Reiseenduro) BMW R 1200 GS, and sister model R 1200 GS Adventure. The GS sales numbers in 2007 decreased slightly, which is expected and due to the 2008 model revision. The sold R 1200 GS in 2007 are 30,077 units, vs. 2006 31,138 units. This is a remarkably low decrease in sales for a year with a model change. Other vendors are hit by landslide sales drop when a model is updated.
